Maintenance Exam

Just a reminder, there is going to be an exam on Monday. The exam will cover the latest unit, Maintenance. The materials in this unit are challenging, so we strongly suggest that you spend some time over the long weekend studying.

You can find a practice test here: http://www.matc.edu/wisconsinmssc/printabledocs/maintenanceassessment/43562_61356.htm

This practice test has 35 questions, and covers much of the same territory as you will find on the actual exam. Additionally, we will have a brief review session prior to the exam Monday evening.

Here's what we suggest as a plan of attack:

1. Reading: Read the materials, and then re-read them.

2. Outlining (Optional): I have found that making an outline is incredibly helpful. To make an outline, simply write down the main ideas in each module, and then the supporting items underneath those. For an example, see the end of this blog entry. You can use this final outline as a study guide.

3. Vocabulary Workbook: Complete the vocabulary workbook. Note that if you have done step 2 (made an outline), your vocabulary items will already be identified.

4. Mind-Sight: Complete all Mind-Sight activities for the unit.

5. Practice Exam: Complete the practice exam.

6. Grade Practice Exam: Grade the exam.

7. Review: Using the practice exam, review all materials, with a special emphasis on those items you did not know on the practice test.

8. Relax. It's only a test.

If you have any questions, please e-mail Eric or Glenn, and we'll try to get back with you quickly.

Thanks and GOOD LUCK!

Sample Study Outline
Module 1: Machine Basics
1. Intro
2. What is a simple machine?
a. Simple Machine: Device that only requires the application of a single force to perform work, as with a lever, wheel and axle, incline plane, etc.
b. Makes work effective by: (1) transferring force position; (2) changing force's position; (3) increasing size of force, or (4) increasing force's direction or speed.
c. Work = Force X distance.
d. Mechanical Advantage:  measure of the force amplification achieved by using a tool, mechanical device or machine system.
e. To find MA, divide resistance force by effort force.

A. Simple Machine Overview
1. Six Simple Machines: (1) Lever, (2) Wheel and Axle, (3) Incline Plane, (4) Wedge, (5) Screw, and (6) Pulley.
2. Two Classes: Equilibrium of torques (lever, pulley, and wheel), and those dependent on vector resolution of forces (inclined plane, wedge, and screw).

etc.

[Once you complete your outline, you can use it as a study guide.]
